Reflections of an Unknown Writer & The Hero’s Journey

Reflections

Well, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve done a reflections post. Or any post. I’ve had some ups and downs, none of which have involved much writing. I know that not working on anything is a problem for me, but I’m still trying to work out a schedule that works for me. I’m currently thinking that I’ll have one day a week to work on my writing – providing that one day isn’t taken up with other adventures.

Life is very busy right now.

The Hero’s Journey

This is a structure system that at first glance seems mostly suited for fantasy novels. It’s similar to Save the Cat in that it consists of 16 phases that you need to follow throughout your story. It is based on the Monomyth originally theorised by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero With A Thousand Faces. It usually accompanies the Chosen One trope within the fantasy genre.

I’ve not used this structure to outline, or write, a novel, though it does interest me. See below for the best way I’ve seen it adapted for use in any genre of story.
