“How are you?”
In class this week, I had a thought about how people always ask “How are you?” as a pleasantry. It’s a polite thing to say. People don’t usually expect a truly honest answer.
Which led me onto the important part of my thought.
If you ask me how I am, and I have a headache, I may say, “All right, despite having a bit of a headache.”
If you ask me how I am and I’m feeling anxious or depressed, I’ll say, “All right thanks, how are you?”
It would never occur to me to say, “Feeling quite anxious this morning,” or, “feeling depressed, actually.”
All week, I’ve been pondering the question: what would happen if I did say these things? What sort of responses would I get?
Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough to give it a try, and stop keeping my mental health Concealed.
